Nerd or Turd?

Third grade seems to be a milestone in a child's life. They are really starting to grow up at this age, and are learning LOTS of things. Like cursive writing, which Ashley loves. Also she will be starting multiplication tables soon. And she is becoming more and more independent. Her interests are also evolving: from Barbies to High School Musical, and her stereo is constantly blasting us out and vibrating the walls in the house--thanks Dad! I can thank you for that one! Anyway, it's been an interesting year so far. I'm amazed at the things her and her friends talk about at school, and no longer is she just oblivious to the world around her. For instance, she knows all about Vanessa Hudgens (aka Gabriella) having nude pics posted on the internet, despite my efforts to keep that piece of news from her. She knows more than I do about all that sort of gossip. Of course, most of it is probably just that without a bit of truth, but who knows? She says that the Troy dude got arrested for drunk driving. I wasn't even aware she knew what drunk driving was. Guess I was wrong.

But we were dining on our pizza and milk tonight, and had a very interesting and memorable conversation thanks to my third grader. We were innocently talking about the differences between Disney Land and Disney World when she got irritated with her brother and broke out into a sing-song voice:

First, Second Third
Automatic NERD!

Of course she pointed at each person on each syllable and made sure to end up pointing at Jacob on Nerd. With an over emphasis on the word, too. We all cracked up, as it was totally unexpected and this is a rhyme completely new to our household. And of course they all had to keep doing it, and when Ashley and Jacob would finish, they would each be pointing at each other.

So Steven chimes in with his little variation: First, Second Third, Can't Spell A Word.
And prompts other creative versions also. I believe the final one was

First, Second Third
Elementary Turd.

And thus began our dinner table debate on whether it should be Nerd or Turd.

i'm glad to see that my house is the only house where the word turd is being discussed at the dinner table.
